Qualifications: PostGraduate Diploma in Music RWCMD - Distinction (Clarinet) Bachelor of Music (Honours) RWCMD - 1st Class (Clarinet) ABRSM Diploma Principles of Instrumental Teaching (Clarinet) Grade 8 Piano Performer's Certificate Recorder Grade 5 Theory About me: I started learning music from the age of 5 when I first started the recorder. I picked up the piano age 8, the clarinet age 12, and the saxophone age 15. I studied the clarinet at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama for 6 years under Robert Plane & Timothy Lines, where I also studied teaching modules for two years & attained my diploma in teaching instruments. I am now working as a professional musician, freelancing on the clarinet with orchestras such as the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Welsh Sinfonia, and Welsh Concert Orchestra. Since starting my Postgraduate course at music college in 2010 I have pursued a passion of spreading classical music to others through teaching. I studied piano for many years before college, reaching my Grade 8, and have much experience accompanying grade exams. I accompany my pupils in lessons & when they take exams, so they can experience the fun of playing as a group, and get lots of practice playing with a piano before events. I also regularly play aural tests on the piano for my pupils. I will happily travel to teach at pupils' houses around Cardiff, or I can accommodate pupils at my house in Cathays where I have a digital piano. I am very flexible with how the pupil enjoys learning music & try to work out the best solution for each individual. The majority of my pupils take ABRSM exams once they have reached the requisite standard, but I also teach people who are learning just for fun! All ages & standards are welcome. I provide a broad teaching curriculum, focusing on developing technique, musicality, scales, theory & aural simultaneously, to encourage the development of the pupil not just as an instrumental player but as a musician. This provides a solid base for them to then progress easily from. Every lesson focuses on a variety of styles of repertoire, music fundamentals, and development work tailored to each pupil. I always encourage pupils to take an active role in their choice of repertoire. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions!
